Anticipation

Anticipation, anticipation

Is makin' me late

Is keepin' me waitin'

Cruising down the Mass Pike the other day, Carly Simon and I together belted out the timeless lyrics to “Anticipation”.  We’ve done our duet many times, but it was only the other day that I actually absorbed the meaning of the lyrics that Simon herself wrote.  While “being present” is widely known to enhance the way we experience life, back in 1971, it was much less mainstream to think this way.  In the song, Carly is in love but always thinking one step ahead:  “But I, I rehearsed those words just late last night - When  I was thinkin' about how right tonight might be”.  Before we know it, what we experience this moment, this day, this year will be repackaged from something that is beautiful and fresh now to something we put in a box labelled “The Good Old Days”, a mere memory.  “Anticipation” has stood the test of time because it is a truth to which all of humanity can relate, but needs reminding of again and again.

So I'll try and see into your eyes right now

And stay right here 'cause these are the good old days
