My Hero

I encountered a real-life hero who magically appeared on my bike ride home from the beach last Sunday. With the wind fully in my face and only half-way through my ride home, I passed a jogger and then saw a very big, very old snapping turtle attempting to cross the busy road.  Happy for a break, I got off my bike and the jogger stopped too.  Living up to its reputation, the turtle was moving, well, like a turtle.  The poor thing had put itself in grave danger of being smooshed to smithereens as it attempted to cross the road.  The jogger searched for a branch while I headed off cars coming toward the turtle (thinking I was a bit of a hero).  But then the real hero appeared.  A car stopped, a woman emerged and approached the turtle.  She deftly picked up that old, huge (and I assume dangerous) turtle and elegantly deposited it back into reeds near the water.  The jogger and I stood in awe as she got back in her car and drove off.
