Under the Banner of Heaven

Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer (author of Into Thin Air).  Krakauer investigated and juxtaposed two histories:  the origin and evolution of The Church of the Latter-Day Saints, and a modern double murder committed by two brothers who subscribed to a fundamentalist version of Mormonism.   Educational and creepy, it made for an excellent read.
