Dry October?
Do you know that feeling after the holiday season when you’ve gone to too many parties, drunk too many glasses of wine and ate too many desserts? Well, I just did that over the course of four months in Nantucket where it felt like one long party. Dinners out, dinners in -- it always included plenty of booze and often concluded with ice cream (my favorite being “C is for Cookie” from Island Kitchen). Once resettled at home, I decided to do “Dry October” and give up alcohol for the month. All went well until October 9th when the Chardonnay got the better of me. I was disappointed in myself the next day and really regretted (both mentally and physically) breaking my personal pact. But, instead of treating my goal as all or nothing and giving up on it, I decided to reinstate Dry October on October 10th. Six days into it, I’m alcohol free once again. Lesson learned: Personal goals, whether stated privately or publicly, can be made, broken and remade because aside from self-judgement, nothing can hold you back.
