Dolemite Is My Name

I honestly don’t love a lot of Eddie Murphy movies, but this biopic about Rudy Ray Moore, the chameleon-like hustler who parlayed his adaptability and his tenaciousness into a career as a stand-up comedian is really very good. Moore’s most enduring character, Dolemite, becomes the star of this movie as well as the star of the movie Moore tries to make. Eddie Murphy has real acting chops and as Roger Ebert says, “Murphy conveys all this superbly, much of it reflected in his eyes. There’s that mischievous twinkle we’ve come to know and love Eddie for, but there’s also a sweetness and vulnerability…”.
