Fake Famous

After writing my Musing on “Influenzas” in BMT#29, I wanted to learn more about social media influencers and how they get their outrageous number of followers, likes and corporate sponsors. This documentary is excellent as the film-maker finds 3 unknowns and transforms them into instagram wonderkids to various degrees using stylists, professional photography, “bots” and lots of tricks. The mechanics of it are interesting but the psychological impact and ethical dilemmas faced by the 3 new influencers is just as riveting. Watch with your kids or at least recommend it to them as it is truly educational. Shout out to Aliya for this excellent recommendation. On HBO Max.
