The Sturgeon Queens
This documentary on the multi-generational family of the founders and owners of Russ and Daughters in NYC is a gem! It was made back in 2014, but didn’t cross my radar until the lovely and talented Carol Joseph brought it to my attention. The story is timeless, fascinating and makes you yearn for a New York bagel schmeared with chive cheese and lox. The stars of the movie are the two (of three) Russ daughters, 92 and 100 at the time of filming. Julie Cohen who wrote and directed the doc is brilliant and incorporated interviews with a plethora of Russ and Daughters’ fans from RBG to customers who have been going there for 40, 50, 60 years. To watch it, have your library card ready or your kid’s student I.D. as only accessible through Kanopy.com which is an education-related platform for streaming. The effort is so worth it!
