Basquiat Exhibit
Before visiting this exhibit, I couldn’t pronounce his name, let alone explain why he is posthumously famous. But thanks to my friend, Susan, who works at the MFA and my daughter, Sabrina, who knows quite a bit about art, I am now woke to the impact Jean-Michael Basquiat had on neo-expressionist painting. He began creating graffiti in the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the 70’s during a period when rap, punk and street art coalesced. By the 80’s, the art of Basquiat and friends was influencing hip-hop artists like Debbie Harry of Blondie. Remember “Rapture”? Street artists are all over her music video.
