Boston Ballet - City Dance

Boston Ballet (BB) doesn’t just have a world class dance company, it also plays a key role in exposing nearly every Boston Public School 3rd grader to the world of dance.  For over 30 years, BB faculty have been going into classrooms and running 60 minute movement workshops once/week over the fall semester.  From January to April, the children can opt into the next stage of the program and take a 90 minute class once/week at the BB studios where they are exposed to a variety of movement forms (like Chinese Fan Dancing which I viewed) followed by a traditional ballet class.  This takes place during the school day so a lot of logistics are required to transport, supervise and professionally staff these classes.  Though I’ve heard about the program for years, I had never watched a class. I admired the focus of the children (at least most of them) as much as I admired the BB staff, the guest teacher and all the aides that make this gift of dance happen.
